MFA: Belarus is seriously concerned over Poland’s aggressive actions
MINSK, 13 April (BelTA) — Belarus is seriously concerned over the aggressive actions of the Polish authorities, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anatoly Glaz told the media, BelTA has learned.
Recently, Polish head of government Mateusz Morawiecki said after his meeting with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris that the United States had promised to station thousands of soldiers in Poland in addition to those already stationed in Poland.
“We are saying publicly and at all levels that we fear in the most serious way the aggressive actions of the Polish authorities. They finance extremists, prepare some kind of militias against the Belarusian population, conduct active militarization. These are obvious and well-known facts. At the same time, the actions of the [Polish] current government are sometimes fanatical, lack logic and rationality, and therefore not always predictable,” Anatoly Glaz said.
The representative of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that Poland closed the border crossing points with Belarus to the detriment of its own population and business.
“I will say even more. Recently, the Polish Council of Ministers decided not to comply with the provisions of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) with regard to our country. The desire to hide even more information about its armed forces from its closest neighbor is evident. Let me remind you: this document was assessed by the UN General Assembly as a ‘cornerstone of European security’. Though outdated, it still determined the military balance to some extent. And now the Polish government is deliberately destroying the last legal pillars of the European security system. It mines the whole of Europe,” the press secretary said.
Anatoly Glaz emphasized that Belarus was not interested in escalation. “Most European countries are not interested in escalation and say they are trying to somehow preserve the fragile balance in the region. There was a lot of noise and criticism when Russia suspended the CFE Treaty for perfectly logical reasons. Now let us see how European capitals are going to respond to the unambiguously destructive move by the Polish government. We will inform them accordingly,” the diplomat said.
“It will also be interesting to hear NATO’s point of view on how such a position correlates with the Alliance’s constantly declared commitment to arms control and military transparency. Clearly, Poland needs to reconsider its decision and return to full and faithful implementation of the CFE Treaty. We are always ready for a constructive and mutually respectful dialogue,” the representative of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
